Printmaking

Eliza Gwynne (b.1999) is a Sydney based designer and printmaker working on unceded Gadigal Land.

My printmaking practice draws on my love of photography and form through detailed studies of fleeting experiences and environments.

Prior to achieving remission from chronic illnesses, my work revolved around health and not feeling present within the ill body.
My monoprint and book works are a more abstract means of capture and record, with organic and distorted recollections.

  • RELIEF, 2020

Created in my final year at Art School; a demonstration of my style more rapidly evolving into my current practice.

Our practices were influenced by adapting to our circumstances during lockdown with few resources. The use of materials like ricepaper for hand-pressing and cheap plywood woodblocks were ideal for the time and continues to shape how I work today.

  • MONOPRINT, 2020

Another evolving process I developed in my last year at NAS was my method of recording and monoprinting.

Developed with experiments of layering and abstraction to disrupt my control of the original monoprint image, my technique imitates the way the mind can mislead and distort the recollection of memories.

a selection of woodblocks, hand pressed on rice paper, which were exhibited in the 2020 National Art School BFA Grad Show.

Biotic is a body of work which focuses on the material processes of carving and hand pressing prints. These works represent a coming-to-terms with the new limitations of the medically compromised body.

        • DETACH, 2020

Developing a technique of erasing and layering water-based, the creation and modification of these dreamscape monoprints are reminiscent of analogue darkroom processes with multiple exposures and distorted film.
